Readiness group for parents and carers.

Vision Australia’s Readiness groups have been developed by, and are led by, our specialist staff including:

•             Occupational Therapists
•             Speech Pathologists
•             Assistive Technology Specialists
•             Orientation & Mobility Specialists
•             Counsellors

Education in the early stage of life is the foundation for independence, inclusion and employment.   So much of a child’s learning is through incidental visual learning and occurs with family. Children who experience a vision impairment learn less by watching others and more through fun and accessible play activities.

Vision Australia’s Readiness groups for parents and carers have been specifically developed to help you build the skills and knowledge needed to support your child to be successful in the home environment and the community, now and in the future.

The groups will include educational sessions for parents/carers about the child development areas they identify as important for their children. These sessions will focus on supporting parents and carers to implement key strategies to support their child at home and in the community with life skills, independence and social inclusion.

PARENT INFORMATION

Breaks, Fractures & First Aid

It is all too often that we see children, while playing, fall down and as a result break or fracture their arm, or wrist. Some sage advice from Mary Dawes, Director of First Aid For You – www.firstaidforyou.com.au is offered below, should parents find themselves confronted with such situation and have to diagnose a broken or fractured arm.

While there is no doubt you will see your child fall countless times whilst playing, basic first aid has the potential to turn the situation around and identify the extent to a child’s injury.

Remember that although many play areas are covered with soft bedding below, it is still extremely easy for a child who falls from a height break a bone or cause a hairline fracture.
Most fractures occur within the arm because children will often place their hands in front of them to break the fall.

Here is a list of some of the telltale signs that your child has broken a bone;

  • If a snap or loud grinding sound is heard, it is an indication that the child has broken a bone
  • There will be deformity, swelling, bruising and pain around the area that is injured
  • It will be painful for your child to move or place pressure on this area – ‘guarding/ protecting their arm from others touching it or from them using it’

The following steps should be followed, should your child experience a fall, injuring their arm;

  • Immediately remove the child from any danger
  • Check the injured area for swelling, bruising or deformity
  • Never apply pressure to a broken limb- simply keep the limb in a position of comfort
  • Seek medical advice as soon as possible

“Supervision is key to minimising the chances a child having a fall and it only takes a split second for this to happen while a child is busy playing. The severity of the fall your child takes is a big indication to the type of injury in which they may have,” adds Mary.

Do a sight – sweep of all areas of play, looking at the potential hazards and the high places children may jump from before letting your child play.

Educate toddlers and older children of the dangers of jumping from high places and climbing on outdoor equipment. Importantly, explain to children that if they were to fall, they could find themselves in a lot of pain, and they should call for help immediately. Remind them to stay calm, without moving the injured area too much.

Please note, these tips and advice are not substitute for first aid knowledge. A first aid course- especially one dedicated to children’s first aid  - such as the First Aid For Kids course will equip your and your kids with the skills needed in such an emergency and you will be grateful you spent the time learning the vital skills.
